As a segment of its scholarship program, the Radio Club of America gave $3,000 to the Foundation for Amateur Radio (FAR) to pass along to three students engaged in the study of wireless communications and who have amateur radio licenses. FAR identified scholarship-money recipients for the 2006-2007 academic year. Two of the three recipients joined RCA as student members, which is good to see. (more…)

Because Arch mentioned me in his message, some RCA members seem to have concluded that Arch and I walk in lockstep. We don’t. Lacy W. Goostree, P.E., W5LMG, died on Nov. 8, 2006. He was 87. Lacy joined RCA in 1990 and became a Fellow in 1994. (more…)

Kenneth D. Hopper, KD7KH, of New River, Ariz., formerly of Holmdel, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, of prostate cancer. He was 81. Ken joined RCA in 1970. He became a Fellow in 1983 and a Life Member in 2001. Ken previously had the call signs K2VAM and W3ZML (more…)

RCA should use more volunteers

RCA should use more volunteers.

When RCA contracted with a management company, Meredith & Hopkins, 10 years ago to handle a portion of its administration, the stated reason (as I recall) was because the Club leaders couldn’t find enough volunteers to do RCA’s work in an adequate fashion and in a timely manner.

First, RCA should use everything it has to encourage more volunteerism. Put notices in the Aerogram, the Proceedings, and on the website. Send requests for volunteers in email. Make announcements at Club meetings. Leaders, make phone calls. Send emails. Talk it up. (more…)

The RCA 2007 Spring Gathering will be held in cooperation with the 2007 APCO Western Regional Conference & Exposition. The APCO convention is sponsored by the 13 chapters of the APCO Western States Region and hosted by APCO’s Southern California Chapter, the California Public-Safety Radio Association. Diners will enjoy an evening meal in the Verandah Grill aboard the Queen Mary. The banquet is set to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50.

RCA schedules breakfast meeting for March 29, 2007

One of the longest-running in RCA’s breakfast-meeting series is the function at the International Wireless Communications Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year’s meeting is set for March 29 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Room N246, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. The editor of Mobile Radio Technology, Glenn Bischoff, will give a speech. Sponsors include Schwaninger & Associates, RadioSoft, MissionCritical Communications, MRT/IWCE and CTA Communications. Reservations are required. Tickets are $15 when paid for in advance; $20 at the door with a reservation.

On April 17, diners at the first Texas Dinner arranged by RCA will hear a speech by Cyren Call Communications’ executive vice president for external affairs, John Melcher. He is also president and CEO of The Melcher Group, a public-safety-oriented consulting firm in Pasadena, Texas. Melcher’s speech, “The Public Safety Family Portrait – Circa 2010,” will explore the three P’s of the future of public safety – politics, policy and Prozac. (more…)

FCC names Julius Knapp chief of Office of Engineering and Technology

RCA Fellow Julius P. Knapp has been named chief of the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology. The appointment was made in late October 2006, apparently without public announcement. I couldn’t find one, anyway. Julie had been serving as acting chief for quite a while — I’m not sure how long. He became deputy chief in May 2001. (more…)
